Monster of the Week, Part 1

Bazel Pedan, Delta Green Agent is the Professional (codenamed Agent Jolly). He was a football player in college who was incredibly lucky. Good things either happen to him, or bad things would happen to his enemies. After graduating from his college, he started working for Delta Green full-time. Later on, he determined that his luck in college runs in the family, giving him the power to Jinx. He now covertly uses Delta Green to understand the truth about his powers. Bazel Pedan joined Delta Green because they have knowledge of the supernatural.

Randal King, Delta Green Friendly is the Flake – a failed cult leader turned Internet influencer. He believed in all the “crazy stuff” before the Masquerade fell apart, and now he’s been vindicated – now he claims he is protecting humanity from all “harmful” stuff. Randal regularly holds in-person conferences where he up-sells videos, DVDs, and 5-minute personal meetings. Randal joined Delta Green because they are good at destroying the monsters that threaten humanity.

Marcus Legant, Delta Green Friendly is the Crooked – a criminal who was dragged into the Mythos underground. As a child, he was picked off the street by a kindly minister and given an education. He later used what he learned to commit crimes, and found out that criminals…were not what they seemed. And neither were the crimes. Marcus used to work for a gang that protects an ancient vampire named “Sigismund” and find him fresh victims, but then left it to join Delta Green. He joined Delta Green because it pays well.

History

Delta Green placed Marcus Legant on a watchlist, and assigned Bazel Pedan to investigate the situation. During this investigation, Bazel Pedan observed Marcus Legant and Sigsimund kidnap a small child. Bazel Pedan then recruited Marcus Legant into Delta Green, threatening Marcus with imprisonment if he doesn’t cooperate with him. Together, Marcus Legant and Bazel Pedan planned a raid on on Sigismund’s gang.

Randal King placed Bazel Pedan on his own watchlist, and cooperated with Bazel regarding the attack on Sigismund’s gang, wanting to get in the good graces of Delta Green (as he wants to infiltrate the organization, believing it to be a front for the Illuminati). Bazel Pedan wanted to keep Bazel Pedan away from the raid, but Randal King participated anyway – sending in a mob of media journalists and ‘patrons’.

It so happens that when the mob appeared, the operation against Sigismund gone FUBAR – the extra attention spooked Sigismund and his gang and caused them to flee before they could harm Marcus Legant and Bazel Pedan.

Therefore, this mob inadvertently saved Bazel Pedan’s life and allowed Marcus Legant to free the small child from the clutches of Sigismund’s gang.

Today, Randal King and Marcus Legant are members of the same support group – Freak-Anonymous. Marcus Legant sees Randal King as his moral compass.

Mission Briefing

Bazel Pedan meets up with Dr. Alice Derleth (codenamed Agent Jessica) and Sunshine (a mute artist and a Delta Green friendly) at Dorchester House, an apartment building that secretly houses important Delta Green assets that are too dangerous to be allowed access to the outside world.

Alice Derleth tells Bazel Pedan about the current situation in Forest Town – strange UFO sightings were taking place there, followed by several disappearances in the area. One person who was “disappeared” (Gina Whaley) was later found dead. Sunshine drew a picture of the UFO in question:

“The aircraft is 40ft (12m) in diameter and keeps aloft with a powerful central lift fan, as well as several small air jets spaced along the outer edge. Three landing lights form a triangle shape. The aircraft is a slate gray color when it’s illuminated. The central fan allows for vertical take-off and landing and hovers with ease, but it takes time to move laterally.”

Alice also pointed out that they previously sent a team to Forest Town: Dr. Grant Emerson (codenamed Agent Jade) went to the area claiming to do a research project. Several Friendlies accompanied him, pretending to be part of Grant’s research staff. Alice hasn’t heard back from Grant for some time, causing her to fear the worst. She is sending in Bazel to see what’s going on.

Bazel is immediately suspicious of the law enforcement in the area – they don’t seem to be doing anything to investigate these disappearances, which suggest they might be involved.

Bazel checked Delta Green’s records to see if they know of any Majestic presence in the area – Majestic would be the ‘official’ US entity in charge of investigating the supernatural, so they probably must also be studying these UFOs as well. He finds out that Majestic’s asset in Forest Town is Officer Lance Brady, the Chief of Security at Forest Town.

Delta Green instructed Bazel to bring on Marcus Legant and Randal King to the case as well. As Bazel leaves Dorchester House, he sees a newspaper article about Forest Town. Officer Lance Brady blames the disappearances on a cult that calls itself the Dao Sâm – the “Ginseng Knife”.

Bazel Pedan remembered that the Dao Sâm figured heavily in the origins of Delta Green. It was an organization that operated in Vietnam and tried to summon a deity called Angka before. Delta Green launched Operation OBSIDIAN in an attempt to stop the Dao Sâm. Though Angka was indeed destroyed, the collateral damage was so great that the United States outlawed Delta Green in response. Delta Green believed that the Dao Sâm was also destroyed.

The Diner

Bazel Pedan calls both Marcus Legant and Randal King, using dedicated burner phones provided by Delta Green. He instructed them to meet him at an old, cheap, roadside diner (Alexander’s Grill) that is outside the Miskatonic Valley. There, in the booth they talked about the mission in question. Ratty lighting hang down across the booth, illuminating it.

The first question the party discussed was the nature of the UFO. Is it from outer space? Or from the future? Forest Town does have time communication after all. Are aliens involved? Is the UFO itself an alien?

Bazel Pedan prefers not to speculate – all Delta Green knows is that they are abductions and UFO sighting. He’s more concerned about the rationale for Forest Town’s creation. Vingroup says they want to stop a disaster from taking place in the future, but refuses to tell people what that disaster is.

Randal King then revealed that, before he drove over to Alexander’s Grill, he used his connections to get an autopsy report of Gina Whaley.

“The medical report notes that Gina experienced second-degree burns on her face, neck, and forearms and some of the tissue in her hands was showing early signs of gangrene. The medical examiner’s autopsy revealed some puzzling information: Gina, who had no issues with eyesight at her last recorded physical, recently developed cataracts. Her intestines and stomach lining were in several pieces by the time she died and were heavily perforated.”

Randal King and Bazel Pedan gets in a discussion over whether to trust Vingroup. Bazel states that this could all be lies. Randal points out that if people was indeed lying, they would try a more believable lie than just stating that a company in Ukraine selling Vietnamese food turns into a massive megacorporation in the 2020s. A liar would claim to be talking to an AI, or some other futuristic entity. Bazel responds that a liar would claim something unbelievable exactly to make his lie more believable.

It was then that that the party notices a police officer (Bazza Karpos) staring at them from across the booth. The party approaches Bazza Karpos and talk to him. Bazza replies he’s eating food and there’s nothing to worry about – they should go back to talking. The party decides it is best to leave the diner and continue their conversation in the car rather than continue being observed by Bazza. Marcus Legant recognizes Bazza Karpos as one of the police officers that opposed him in the past.

Bazza Karpos gets into his own car and try to tail the party’s car. Marcus Legant takes over the wheel and drives well enough to lose Bazza Karpos. Secretly, however, another police officer follows the party without being detected. The alternative would be to get to to Forest Town at night.

Entering “Forest Town” Proper

Forest Town is a massive research compound surrounded by several security checkpoints. The party drove up to a security checkpoint, and Randal King claimed that the party is here on a hunting trip and want access to Forest Town to do some fishing. After all, there is still greenery around, and a sparkling river. However, the security guard was not convinced, as Randal did not have a fishing permit.

It took Randal a few hours to acquire said fishing permit (as he had to fill out forms at the security checkpoint), but once he did so, the party was allowed to drive into Forest Town.

Once there, Randal King contacted his Internet “patrons” and gave them the list of people who “disappeared” following the UFO sightings. The followers figured out that all of those people who disappeared were drug traffickers connected to “Mrs Flamsteed”. The Internet friends suspect that “Mrs Flamsteed” is a name of some street drug.

However, Marcus Legant knows the truth. He informed Randal King that “Mrs Flamsteed” is actually a sorcerer that summon demons from Hell. She is an enforcer for a group of crystal-energy dealers (the crystals deal with “quantum abnormalities”). Once, Marcus received a job from “Mrs Flamsteed” to beat up a person who stole some life-crystals. Marcus did beat up said person…but then took the life-crystals and ran away. As a result, “Mrs Flamsteed” is one of Marcus’ many enemies.

Randal King muse that a demon could technically be a flying object.

Randal King did find it surprising that one of Marcus’ enemies may be located in Forest Town, but Bazel Pedan dismisses it as a huge coincidence.

Bazel Pedan relates a short story – while he was in college, a female pollster asked for his number while conducting a survey. Instead of telling his own number, Bazel Pedan came up with a random set of digits. It so happens that this random set of digits happen to correspond with the pollster’s phone number.

Randal King finds that to be very unlikely, and thinks that it was a message from the universe, but Bazel Pedan points out that since they were both in the same area, the area code and the first three digits of the number had to be the same, meaning he only had to “guess” the last four digits of the number. The odds would be one-in-a-thousand, which is rare, but not impossible.

Randal is similarly unconvinced, stating that it may very well be that this woman might be standing right behind Bazel Pedan right now. Bazel finds that to be unlikely, but then turns around and sees…that very pollster – Chrissy Wade.

Meeting Chrissy Wade

Chrissy Wade introduced herself as a local resident of the area, who lives in the last remnants of the family estates of the late Colonel Satchel Wade. Chrissy Wade is still pretty upset at Bazel Pedan after that survey incident, believing that Bazel had read Chrissy’s mind. Bazel tried to explain to Chrissy that he merely guessed the phone number, but Chrissy doesn’t believe him. Chrissy informed Bazel that she had changed her phone number regardless, so the number Bazel has is out-of-date.

Randal King asked Chrissy Wade about her purpose for visiting the party. Chrissy Wade explained that she was told that the party was were here to do some fishing. She hasn’t seen any fish around here recently, and thus want to know if they’re still there.

At this point, Randal King noticed that he never actually saw any animals in Forest Town, which he finds highly suspicious. Randal King states that he will let Chrissy know if he finds any fish.

Randal King and Bazel Pedan continued to pump Chrissy Wade for more information, asking about her life and the origins of Forest Town. Chrissy Wade state that she was studying in Miskantoic University when she met Bazel Pedan – and that she was only working as a pollster to get some money to complete her education. After she graduated from college, she created a non-profit organization called the Satchel Wade Memorial Society to venerate her father, since he would give good luck to those who pray to him. Bazel seems intrigued by Chrissy Wade’s “ancestor worship”.

Chrissy Wade explained that the Wade family used to own all the territory that makes up “Forest Town”. She sold most of it off to Miskantoic University so they could start construction on Forest Town. Some land next to the “Business Park” (one of the six sectors in Forest Town) is under her control (though the Society manages it on her behalf – and since Chrissy Wade is the leader of the Society, she indirectly controls said land.

Randal King ask Chrissy Wade to give a tour of Forest Town. Chrissy Wade agreed, and called for an underlining to help handle some of her other tasks.

The Tour

First, Chrissy Wade took the party over to territory that is still owned by her. This territory contains her family estate, a nearby motel where people sleep, and a one-story building, marked with a silver cross and a statue of a green hawk on top. The one-story building serves as a shrine where people venerate Colonel Satchel Wade and receive good luck from him – there’s a line of tourists waiting for their turn to enter into the building.

Bazel Pedan ask if the motel has any space, and Chrissy Wade says that it only has space for the party. The other rooms have been taken up by Dr. Grant Emerson and his research staff. They have not visited their rooms for quite some time, but they had the space reserved, so the motel staff would not investigate any further.

The party book a reservation at the motel.

Randal King asked about the strange hawk symbol on the one-story building. Chrissy explained the symbolism of the green hawk – the hawk is very dedicated to his task, and is always alert. Bazel Pedan point out a different interpretation – the hawk is a predator who hunts. Randal King asked about where this symbolism came from. Chrissy Wade state that she built this thing based on a dream she had. In that dream, the hawk was meant to represent dedication and alertness – if there’s anything wrong with that symbolism, blame it on the dream.

Bazel Pedan and Randal King also mused that the hawk looked similar to the logo of House Atreides from the Dune novel, and wondered if that may be where Chrissy got her inspiration from.

Randal King asked about how the veneration process works – this exchange of worship for luck. Chrissy Wade states that veneration has different levels, and the higher the level, the more powerful the good luck:

– Level 1: Mere prayer
– Level 2: Non-Harmful, Symbolic Offering
– Level 3: Harmful Offering of Blood (either yourself, or someone else)

As for extracting blood from someone else, wealthy people can buy blood from an organization called Sigismund Enterprises. According to Chrissy Wade, people voluntarily give their blood to Sigismund Enterprises, so it would be ethical to source blood from this group. Randal King knows that Chrissy is lying – people are not voluntarily giving their blood to Sigismund Enterprises.

Randal King, Bazel Pedan, and Marcus Legant suspect that there is a link between Sigismund Enterprises, and the vampire Sigismund. Marcus Legant brings up the subject of vampires being bad news, but Chrissy brushes it off – she doesn’t see any problem with them. Chrissy does not appear to know that Sigismund is a vampire, but it also seems like she wouldn’t care even if you tell her.

Bazel Pedan asked what would happen if someone wants to go beyond offering blood, and start offering organs instead. Chrissy Wade mused that you might get even more luck that way, but that it would attract too much attention from the authorities (out of fear that this may eventually lead to people engaging in organ trading). Better not to risk it.

Randal King changes the topic – he wonders about the illegal street racing that takes place at Circle Road in the middle of the night. Forest Town is a research facility that tightly controls who goes in and out, and most people who come here are either researchers, the staff for some local businesses, and tourists. Yet there are still illegal street races, and hotrod racers. Why?

Chrissy Wade invites the party to a secret elevator in the motel. The elevator allows Chrissy to choose from multiple basements – she selected the first basement. The elevator doors then open to reveal a secret casino, hiding underneath the motel.

Chrissy Wade explains that this casino is actually illegal – she bribes the police to avoid getting arrested (Marcus Legant sympathizes with Chrissy – “Of course it’s an illegal casino. This is Massachusetts.”). Chrissy Wade states that this should explain why illegal street races occur in Forest Town, even if the police could easily crack down. Randal King nods.

Chrissy Wade explains that the casino exists to raise funds for the Society. Some people would get good luck and then come here to the casino to “test” how good their luck is.

Chrissy Wade explains all the other basements as “back office” floors for Society’s operations – nobody is allowed to join except people within the Society. Bazel Pedant ask how people can join, and Chrissy state that it’s just simply a matter of doing volunteering work like cleaning the casino and the shrine to Colonel Satchel Wade. Bazel muses that it’s essentially working for Chrissy, and Chrissy nods, but states that she’s merely doing it on behalf of her father.

Marcus Legant and Randal King wonders how the casino would make any money if the luck is actually good. Chrissy explains that even if people lose money, they might lose less money than others. Bazel Pedant points out that people may know about the casino but not about Colonel Satchel Wade, and thus might not have the good luck. Marcus Legnat jokes about the possibility that the Society has a counterfeiting operation in one of the “backoffice floors”. The party laughs. Chrissy does not.

Bazel Pedan asked if Colonel Satchel Wade liked gambling. Chrissy Wade said he did not – he actually despised it. But there’s a demand for gambling, and so the Society delivered. Bazel Pedan points out that maybe it’s okay not to fulfill certain demands. Randal King find the explanation dubious – it’s strange that a society dedicated to worshipping a dead colonel would disrespect his wishes so blatantly by opening up a casino in his name.

Still, Randal King really enjoy the casino’s atmosphere and played a few rounds at the blackjack table. He says that he is having so much fun here that he might not even have time to actually fish. Marcus Legant smiled.

Randal King state that if Chrissy Wade was making good money from the casino, why would she want to sell the land off to Miskantoic University and allow Forest Town to be built. Chrissy Wade explain that she had a dream to sell off this land, and that’s why she sold it off.

As the party leaves the casino to continue their trip, Marcus Legant quietly proposes a raid on the casino. Randal King points out the irony of visiting Forest Town to investigate a UFO sighting only to discover a blood sacrificial cult.

Chrissy Wade shows off the town’s six sector – each sector containing:
– Research Labs
– Residential Area
– Security Office
– Centralized Water-And-Waste Monitoring Station
– Electrical Substation
– Market Area
– Cozy stripmall of gas stations, shops and restaurants

Chrissy Wade then drives the party to the outskirts of the Time Communication Center – a series of four houses where people visit at night and conduct a proprietary ritual, allowing them to communicate in the future. Only select people are allowed access to the Center itself. Marcus Legant asked if the houses are connected to any utilities (like power or water). Chrissy said they are not – why would they need to be? The houses were built only to conduct the ritual; nobody actually needs to live there. Randal King muses that the houses may be sympathetic tokens, probably constructed to look like a futuristic Vietnamese settlement.

Then Chrissy Wade takes the party to the center of Forest Town, to Center Park. There, in the center of the park lie a brick wall that surrounds a large shallow pound. In the middle of the pound is an island, and on that island is an artificial dolmen covered in ivy. Chrissy Wade had a dream to build this dolmen, and when she sold the land off to Miskatonic University, asked them to build the dolmen – which they duly did.

Marcus Legant note that the “dolmen” actually looks exactly like Stonehenge – the only real difference is that there are strange ritual markings in the center of the stones. Randal King thinks that

The tour finally ends as Chrissy Wade shows off the Access Gates that the party had to go through in order to enter Forest Town. She then takes the party back to the motel. It is getting late. Chrissy Wade then leaves the party, as she needs to handle her own personal business.

Post-Tour Discussion

Now that Chrissy Wade is gone, the party now feels more free to talk about Chrissy Wade.

Randal King state that he was was afraid of asking about the UFO, out of fear of alienating Chrissy Wade and losing her as a source of information. However, the weirdness of the dolmen suggest that would be the place where the UFO would go.

Bazel Pedan tells Randal King that he thinks Chrissy Wade is very crazy – who would follow their dreams so blindly? Randal King disagreed, responding that it’s good for people to follow your dreams.

Randal King points out the oddity that both of Marcus Legant’s enemies are present in the Forest Town. Bazel Pedan responds that this is why Delta Green brought Marcus Legant on board – that they knew his enemies would be present. Randal King decided to accept this explanation: Randal wanted to prove that there are no coincidences, and in this case, Bazel Pedan agreed with him.

Randal King and Bazel Pedan wonder why would animals be missing here, and if they’re being driven off (or even killed off) as a result of the activities of the Society. Marcus Legant muses that Sigismund hates seafood.

Randal King point out that their hunting cover story was kinda superfluous – the party could have just claimed to be tourists here to visit the shrine that venerates Colonel Satchel Wade. Randal wonder how someone could gain access to the illegal casino here, but muses it’s probably because someone (like Chrissy Wade) showed them how to get in.

The party hatches a plan to intercept the UFO at night. Randal King and Marcus Legant would sneak off to the dolmen at night (where the UFO is most likely to be at), while Bazel Pedan sets up a camera at the top of the motel, in the hopes of finding the UFO and tracing where it is.

As they prepare to execute on the plan, Randal King realizes that the UFO’s identity was staring in their face the entire time. Forest Town researches automative engineering. The UFO could just be a flying car designed by the future. The flying car doesn’t even have to come from the future – the future could just tell Forest Town how to build a flying car in the present. Bazel Pedan notes that in a world where flying cars would be prevalent, there would be regulations about airspace usage. So testing flying cars in the past (where they would be less flying cars around) would make a whole lot of sense.

Seeing The UFO

At night, Randal King and Marcus Legant sees five cultists, being led by a female head cultist. They were escorting five prisoners. The prisoners were chained to the outskirts of the dolmen, while the cultists operate within the ritualistic circle. The cultists were guarded by two police officers – Officer Lance Brady and Bazza Karpos. Then the UFO showed up and started targeting one of the chained prisoners. Meanwhile, Bazel Pedan follows the trajectory of the UFO, from ontop of the motel.

Randal King and Bazel Pedan identified four of the prisoners as being recent abductees. The fifth prisoner is Dr. Grant Emerson. Bazel Pedan concluded that Dr. Grant Emerson’s friendlies may also be prisoners as well.

Bazel Pedan uses his Jinx power to move one of the stones in the dolmen, hitting the UFO and doing slight damage. This freaked out the UFO, as well as the cultists. Then Marcus Legant fired a shotgun at the cult leader.

The police and the cultists panicked, running away from the dolmen. The UFO also fled from the scene. This allows the party to free the prisoners. Only the cult leader, wounded by the shotgun blast, remained.

The cult leader, enraged, used a taser at Marcus Legant. She then rushed over to Marcus’s prone body and started trying to eat it. The cult leader gained some health, but it was not enough to compensate for the loss of blood caused by the shotgun blast. She perished into goo.

Randal King grabbed the dead cult leader’s taser and wallet. Randal is elated to find a fishing license in the wallet, implying that there might actually be fish here.

Randal King decides to interrogate Dr. Grant Emerson to find out what happened to the previous mission sent here.

Dr. Grant Emerson state that he and his team was very paranoid about the situation in Forest Town and decided that they would conduct a blood sacrifice – sacrificing themselves in order to stop the UFO. The idea was that he and the Friendlies would drive a car so fast on Circle Road that it would cause an accident. Dr. Grant admits that the idea came to him in a dream, but he was desperate.

Before they could implement the blood sacrifice plan, the cultists intercept Dr. Grant and his Friendlies and imprisoned them. Every day, they would be kept imprisoned while the cultists monitor their medical condition. At night, some of the prisoners would be taken to the dolmen. There, the UFO would use its beam against each prisoner. Dr. Grant knew a person recently died (Gina Whaley) – the cultists just throw the body out and continue their experiments.

Back at the motel, Bazel Pedan, upon hearing the word “beam”, conclude that the victims (both the abductees and Dr. Grant’s team) are suffering from microwave poisoning.
